Morgan Henzlik

What are the biggest trends for Spring 2015? Morgan Henzlik gives us an insider's look.

Blayne Macauley March 11, 2015

The best thing about writing this blog is that it gives me an excuse to befriend people I think are cool.  Like, it's very easy for me to write someone an email I sort of know and say, "Hey, remember me?  I write a blog now and think you're awesome, so lets have a drink."

That's exactly what happened with Morgan Henzlik.  We both went to Westminster, and I knew her by name.  I was a little shy/unsure of myself in high school, and I never would have had the guts to just go up to someone and ask to be their friend.  As luck would have it, we both beame friends with Nikole Morrow-Pettus, the most talented make up artist in the city (cross my heart.  She works at Van Michael Buckhead and will change you life).  Nikole reminded me about Morgan and that in the 10+ years since high school, she'd grown into an Atlanta style icon.  Seriously.  She now owns Morgan Kylee, a boutique where the who's who of Atlanta shops.

A few weeks ago I did write that email to Morgan and we met for a drink.   Morgan came in wearing a leather hat and military shirt and looked effortlessly cool.  Since then we've met several times and she always looks flawless.  I've decided in my next life I want to come back and own Morgan Kylee.  Doesn't that just sound like the best job ever?

Since Morgan knows a whole lot more than I ever will about fashion, I asked her to write a quick piece about Spring runway trends, so we'll all know what to watch for in the coming months.  Now, I'm off to find a bohemian evening dress...

Spring 2015 Trends with Morgan Henzlik

It’s not easy thinking about warm-weather style right now as we are very much still under winter’s pale cold thumb.  However, if we can just hold on a couple more weeks, the amazing trends that the Spring ’15 collections are bringing to the table will be here. One only needs a brief skim of the SS15 collections to quickly pinpoint the season’s main muse, the Seventies. Designers finding inspiration in a previous decade is nothing new, so while the concept of the vintage influence isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, the level at which the iconic era dominated this season’s runways is.  Most, if not all of Spring ‘15s specific trends, stem from the Seventies, and the way the designers have remixed them and made them their own is completely refreshing.

The Power Suit

Be on the lookout for new interpretations on the classic standard that is the power suit.  I have always been a HUGE fan of blazers, so the heavy influence that menswear has on women’s fashion as of late is amazing.  The dichotomy between the traditional tone of a suit, being masculine and powerful, and the beauty and softness that women naturally have is perfection.  Whether you throw on your blazer with jeans and a white t-shirt, or you wear the suit separates together, the power suit is classic-making it not only a trend that will not fade, but also a great investment.

Bohemian Evening Dress

Watch for bohemian sophistication.  This Spring showcases the success many designers have found with combining the laid-back bohemian vibe and the formal, elite tone of evening wear.  From fringe to whimsical beaded prints, designers like Valentino and Malene Birger have found ways to modify and elevate the casual undertone of bohemian characteristics, and successfully incorporate them into the evening wear category.

Gingham

Gingham is the print you'll see everywhere in 2015.   I’m a big proponent of the well-known idiom, “you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.”  Just be inspired by it, and tweak it a little to make it your own.   Many designers ranging from Harvey Faircloth to Altuzarra have done just that with this season’s "It" print.  By taking the traditional picnic print and combining it with edgy silhouettes and sheer textures, designers have made gingham current again.

Suede

While “spring suede” seems more like an oxymoron than a realistic warm-weathered trend, the SS15 collections are proving that the conventional views on this luxe fabric are out the window.  By combining pastel colors, super-fine weights, and incredibly soft finishes, designers like Jill Stuart and Jason Wu have thankfully widened the seasonal boundaries on the beautiful winter material.

Lace

Be on the lookout for the numerous upgrades designers have made to the bridal-inspired texture. The runways displayed intricate thread work, laser cut outs, and current silhouettes that are clear indicators that the intricate fabric has been transformed.  Through modern technology and sheer creativity, the matrimony favorite is no longer aisle specific, but now a street style staple.
