Pooling!

To be honest, it was so hot in Chang Mai that I was sweating in this picture!  In the pool!  It was well over 100 every day, but it felt like 120!  We decided to leave a few days early and head to Koh Samui.  We stayed at the Imperial Boathouse, which was fine... bit it was definitely NOT the Four Seasons.

Jimmy and I decided to combat our shock over exiting the Four Season bubble by doing a little beach bar crawl.  Stop #1.

And post drinks, on the way to dinner, we had a nice little photo op.

The next day we went to the beach in the morning, which was beautiful! IMG_3244

And then we went into Chaweng for lunch.  We stopped at the coolest hotel for lunch, The Library.

We of course opted for a good old Carona... too many Thai beers.

We then moved to a Thai Beach Club for a second beer and a Jello Shot :)

As well as a polaroid with a monkey.  $5 well spent... especially after doing a little afternoon drinking!

The next day we went back to the Four Seasons... which we will explore in part 3 :)

Honeymoon... Part 1/2

We went to Thailand for our honeymoon.  We took a little tour through the Four Seasons hotels in Thailand.  Wife Perk!!!

We ate cashew and chicken goo on top of pineapple that blew my mind!  Seriously the best think I've ever eaten.

Then we traveled to the Four Seasons Golden Triangle.

Our tent.  That's a bathtub in the middle of the room!  It was over 100, but I forced myself to take a bath.  Do you blame me?  It was awesome.  I of COURSE had a cold drink in the bath.   Jimmy's mom taught me about vodka, soda and orange juice, with two limes, which is the best drink in the world.  The orange juice in Thailand is actually tangerine juice, which SO much better!  I drank about a million... well maybe less, but I was obsessed.  I'm thinking of juicing tangerines just to recreate the drink.

Our bed and the view to the porch.  There is also a FREE mini bar beyond the bed, which was the source of the cocktails...  obvi.

This was the pool.  To be 100% honest with you, this was my least favorite of the pools... but I mean... come on.  It was still awesome.

Ski Trip Results (!!!)

Calm down.  I'm going to tell you about how my little "white lie" turned out on the trip. Screen Shot 2012-03-21 at 4.29.28 PM

That's me.  The one on the snow.  I was "resting my legs." ha.

P1000576It turns out I had not over-exaggerated Jimmy's skiing ability in my head.  He actually was that good.  Show off :)

P1000546

Thank God I brought Ben along so I could let them do their own thing and ski at my own pace.

P1000560

See?  Two peas on a Pod.

P1000557

We all skied together a little bit as well.  It went much better than I expected.  Even though my legs were on fire and I kept making bargins such as "If I ever get down this mountain I'll never lie again," (hmmmm) I did excel at certain parts of the mountain...

P1000552

As expected, I really rocked the chairlift part of skiing.  I would sit back and pretend like I didn't care at all if we put the bar down, but as soon as we did I would throw my skis up there... so thankful for just a few minutes of relief.  As the boys discussed the next runs we would take, I secretly hoped someone getting off at the top would fall just to make the ride a little bit longer.

On the bright side, my legs and butt did get a nice workout, which is why I felt fine about doing this...

ss4

Apparently beer tastes better if you feel like you earned it.

P1000566

The only slight issue I had was when I got too tired/frustrated/unable to ski and jimmy had to carry my skis so I could take a break.  I'm not sure my brother will ever let me live it down, but hey, if that's the worst thing that happened I'll consider it a success.

Other successes?

Tons of great meals in Jackson Hole... and of course tons of hot tub time at the Four Seasons.

I'm a pretty lucky girl.

Speaking of being lucky (see that segue there) , you too could be lucky IF you enter our contest to win a FREE AD in the Beacham Series.

Screen Shot 2012-03-16 at 3.57.33 PM

Come on, don't make me beg.  Right now I only have 3 entries, so if you enter you have a GREAT chance of winning.  PLEASE PLEASE PELASE.

The deadline is Tomorrow... Thursday, at midnight.  Please please please.  Don't make me look like a loser (who has to get someone to carry her skis).

Fun things coming up on This Photographer's Life:

1. I'm giving away two FREE autographed copies of Historical Concept's new book "Coming Home."

2. We will have to chose a winner of the free ad!!! yea!!!

3. We have listed a beautiful new modern house (my favorite)

Jackson Hole and my big fat lie.

Jimmy, my mom, my brother and I are going to Jackson Hole...  You would think I would be thrilled.  It's obviously beautiful there, and with our tropical winter in GA this year, I have been craving snow.

I've actually been to Jackson Hole.  When I was 18 my dad and I went on a Father/Daughter photo trip out West, and it was our first stop.  My dad is a really amazing photographer, and this trip together was my high school graduation present. It was such a nice time to spend with my dad doing what we love.

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 1.42.44 PM

See, here I am petting a horse (I'm secretly terrified of horses) and holding a camera.

I wonder what I was taking there?

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 1.43.33 PM

I remember this was the first place we went when we got into Jackson Hole.  We were looking for some sort of souvenir or something.  I think maybe my dad got a hat?

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 1.43.43 PM

One of the coolest things we did was to going paragliding.

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 2.22.04 PM

I took this photo right after we were in the air.  I wish I had more photos of that.  It was amazing, and one of the most adventurous things I've ever done.

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 1.44.49 PM

My dad and I had such a nice time.

I'm sure you are thinking, "Ok, so what's the problem?"  Well, here we go.

Jimmy is really great at skiing.  He went to college in Colorado and worked in Jackson Hole.  He's skied his whole life.

I have been skiing since I was about 9.... but, in my brother's words, "I'm just not very athletic."

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 1.41.14 PM

Which is fine when you're with your family, but not fine when you've led your boyfriend to believe you're "a skier."

Eager to impress Jimmy, on our first date I totally talked up my abilities.  The conversation went something like this:

Jimmy: "Oh yea, I lived in Jackson Hole...  I really try to go out there 3-4 times a season."

Me: "I've been to Jackson Hole.  Great skiing there"  <---  more of a white lie... wait for it....

Jimmy: "Oh, you ski?"

Me: "I LOVE skiing!  My family and I go all the time.  We really love Aspen, but last time we went to Deer Valley because my brother was working there."  (I am CRINGING that those words actually came out of my mouth... but still only a half lie... the LOVE part.)

Jimmy: "Oh cool.  Are you good at skiing?"

Me: "For sure.  I've been skiing since I was little, and I just can't wait to get out there every Winter.  You can't keep me off the slopes." <-----  TOTAL and complete LIE.

Whoops.

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 5.36.03 PM

Well, here we are on the cusp of our trip, and I've begun my backpedaling.

Phrases such as,"Remember how I said I was good at skiing?  Well, I MAY have slightly exaggerated my abilities," and "When we go to Aspen, I don't exactly ski AJAX... I'm more of a Snowmass/Buttermilk kind of girl," have been spilling out like beans.

Luckily I have been talking up my other abilities, such as:

Sandwich eating and cappuccino drinking  (Possibly the worst picture ever taken of Kate and me --->  also hysterical.)

and snowmobiling.

I am pretty much an expert at all the parts of skiing that don't actually involve skiing.

Screen Shot 2012-03-08 at 5.59.58 PM

Hopefully Jimmy still loves me when we get back...

Wish me luck.

A trip to Highlands, NC with my best friend...

About a month ago I had the opportunity to go on a road trip with my best friend.  I haven't done that since college.  Beth Nellis joined Beacham & Company this summer.  She is selling real estate in Atlanta, but she also lives in Highlands, NC some of the time.  She is selling real estate up there as well.  Beacham & Company built a whole new website for real estate in Highlands/Cashiers, and we needed pictures.  I was scheduled to go up in the middle of the week and take some photographs.  I felt so badly because my best friend Lindley had just broken up with her boyfriend of three years, and I had to leave town.  On a whim I said, "hey, why don't you come with me?"  She agreed!  Girls trip!  We drove up to Highlands and took pictures, ate food, drank wine and lived it up at the Old Edwards Inn.  I came back feeling refreshed, in love with Highlands, and reminded of why best friends are so important.

While we were there I said, "hey, why don't you write about this for my blog?"  She is a much better writer than me, and I knew she would do a great job capturing the feeling of the trip.  She did! Without further ado...

...

This Writer’s Life: If you’re lucky enough to live in the mountains, you’re lucky enough

Have you ever broken up with someone even though you still loved them?

I did.

Then…I sat on the floor singing the “Bodyguard” soundtrack... singing “I’m Every Woman” to my dog, and thinking I’d probably be alone forever…

The next day, I called Blayne…when she answered, all I said was, “hey… we broke up.” If you’re a girl and you have a best friend, you know those words translate to: “You better do something before I start crying hysterically” … she told me, “Pack you’re things, we’re getting out of town.”…perfect best friend response…

At 8:00 am, the next day, I was ready…wearing a fashionable BCBG jumper…of course, I later decided that it made me look fat (which is why there are no pictures of me actually wearing it), but at the time, I was the cutest broken heart in Buckhead…

With our mouths full of Chick-Fil-A breakfast, we bobbed our heads to the new Phish album all the way up 85N…

When we finally found ourselves curling around the mountain roads, we did what most busy Atlantans would do…we got concerned that we didn’t have cell phone service.  Then we tried to call Blayne’s mom to ask what gear we should put the car in…no answer...  I asked, “What do these people even do in the mountains?”...

I was about to find out...

Beth Nellis

Next thing we know, we’re in a town full of sensible people who actually wait to hear the answer when they ask you how you’re doing.  Beth Nellis met us right away at Old Edwards Inn.  I was impressed right off the bat.  Her greeting is genuine and you feel like you are the most important…

She believes Highlands, and she made me believe in it, too.

We follow her to a charming house so I can watch Blayne snap some photographs…and I take some pictures of her taking pictures...

Blayne with her camera

Next, we followed Beth to Highland Country Club, where we took photographs of a croquet court and a lovely garden that was just begging for a bride and groom to take pictures there…

Garden at Highlands Country Club

Once Beth cut us loose we grabbed some lunch on the roof of the Old Edwards Inn…i.e. a couple healthy salads that we loved…  and a cheese plate that we totally polished off!

Rooftop lunch!  If you look closely you can see the top of my jumper!

Notice there is very little cheese left on that plate!

Blayne wanted to go shopping…I wasn’t really in the mood, and by not in the mood I mean I was broke…she bought a few scarves, a striped shirt, and some other stuff for her upcoming Phish shows in Denver…

Blayne had to put on her new scarf RIGHT AWAY!

For dinner, we chose a restaurant known for its Italian (Paolettis), ordered veal and chicken, and then discussed how it must not have been their specialties…don’t worry; we still managed to consume 600 plus weight watchers points and a few glasses of wine…

Clearly the flash did not go off...

The next day before we left, we visited the Bascom, an art center, where we discovered the magic of the striped shirt Blayne bought the day before…and by magic, I mean, it takes 20 lbs off of every person who puts it on…

See how much skinnier Blayne looks in the left photo than the one on the right?  MAGIC!

We liked it so much that we drove all the way back into town so I could buy one for myself… as luck would have it, there was only one left, and it was my size!!

Yes!

I’m telling you…that’s just how life is in Highlands…the last one’s always your size, and you always get a great parking spot…

On our way home we made stops at two different waterfalls, drove down a road less traveled, and stopped at a restaurant that has no menu…they just bring you everything…

And then…we sang…

We sang the whole way back, at the top of our lungs, with smiles on our faces …you know you’ve found a best friend for life when you can actually sing without caring how bad you sound…

So, now, I regret asking, “What do these people even in the mountains?”…

I was missing the point… it’s not about what you do… it’s about what you don’t do…

You don’t worry…you don’t feel sad…you don’t think about all the things you should be doing…you don’t think about the person who’s not calling…

Remember that time I broke up with that someone who I still loved?…Me neither…

Take it from me…mountain air makes a weak heart a little stronger… and when you’re up that high, ears popping and all, you have no choice but to find a better perspective…
