Emerald August Spring 2015

10 Questions with Laura Moylan

1. If you could choose one celebrity and raid their closet, who would you choose?

Probably Kate Middleton.  She is so classic and elegant, but can also be laid back and down to earth.  She has some amazing dresses and coats.

2. Who is your favorite Southern artist?

Shara Hughes. I first discovered her at her latest show at Moca Ga where I went for a fashion show for another amazing Atlanta based designer and friend, Megan Huntz.

3. Describe your prefect date night.

Living in Inman Park, there are so many great restaurants within walking distance.  On a warm summer night, I love walking to Fritti for their delicious pizza or Serpas.  I love their salmon chips.  My fiancé and I love to eat out then head back home with ice cream and a movie.

4. Where is your favorite local place to shop for clothes?

I can pretty much walk into Calypso on the west side and like everything they have.  Also love to shop Annie Griffin trunk shows and warehouse sales.

5. What did you want to be when you were young?

I wanted to be a clothing designer.  No joke, when I was 8 years old I put together my first "collection" and asked my parents if they could help me find a manufacturer. :)

6. What book  made a difference to you?

Lately I have been reading a lot of business and entrepreneurial books.  Right now I am finishing up "let my people go surfing" by Yvon Chouinard founder and owner, patagonia.  It is so inspiring to hear the story of an extremely successful business man from the beginning with all the struggles he has faced over the years.

7. What is your favorite thing to cook at home?

I love Ina Garden and have also been using a LOT of Smitten Kitchen recipes lately..Deb Perelman's recipes from her blog and cookbook are amazing!  One of my favorite things I have made from her blog are these Pancetta White Bean and Swiss Chard Pot Pies.

9. Where is your favorite place to buy things for your home?

I love West Elm Atlanta and love that they support local businesses.  Love the modern look with some classic vibes.  I also love to look for treasures at Kudzu Antiques and Paris on Ponce.

10. What is your main goal for 2015?

My main goals for 2015 is to balance work, family life and pleasure.  I spend a lot of time on my business, but realize it is so important to take time to exercise and relax.  Trying to find a balance can be hard!  I have to remind myself it is just as important to take some R&R.

I’m SO excited to announce that a collection of my paintings will be available at @verveinteriors1 in South Carolina starting today!
.
This piece “I knew she was sleeping” is about looking out the window on a long train ride. It continues the theme of being on the road in pursuit of the “American Dream.”
I’ve been reading “Travels with Charlie in Search of America,” by John Steinbeck, and I cannot recommend it enough. His use of language is so artful.

The title of this painting is from the song “America” by Simon and Garfunkel.

I’ve been listening to a book called “The Courage to Create,” which has been really interesting. So much of the book is about the source of anxiety and how art relates to that. I’ve always been a fairly anxious person, and I think that shows in the business of my work. The funny thing is that since I’ve been painting on the reg, I’ve been less anxious than I’ve ever been in my life. I had lunch with my friend @couchartist the other day and talked about how much anxiety NOT doing my art caused me in the past. There’s certainly anxiety now... every time I post a painting I get anxious people won’t think it’s very good, but that anxiety is NOTHING compared to not doing my art and not sharing it with the world! Happy Sunday! Love, a less anxious person 🙌🏻🙌🏻.
